New Outdoor Learning Grant

The CFEC is pleased to announce we have received a $2,000 grant from Big Green Jumpstart in Broomfield, Colorado. This program was created to accelerate outdoor learning in approximately 500 schools and nonprofit organizations across the country. The funding will allow our horticultural therapists to expand the diversity of plants and vegetables our students are exposed to, giving them the opportunity to initiate their own learning experiences and engage in activities that are good for their bodies, minds, and spirits. We have also been able to install a new water pump for the outdoor sink at The Special Children's School, giving more direct access for students. Depending upon their level of manual dexterity, students use the water station to fill up a watering can, spray bottle, or sponge to build their fine motor skills.A variety of outdoor art, science, and physical education activities are also being made possible with the help of the Jumpstart grant, many of which can be taken home and shared with families. The increase in resources and supplies provided by the Big Green Jumpstart grant will create an opportunity to extend the outdoor time currently available to students by offering additional hands-on activities. Teachers will also have the opportunity to collaborate with the horticultural therapists to determine meaningful and ability-appropriate activities that can be used at any point during the program day. The CFEC is proud to be a part of this outdoor learning initiative!
